Woodblock Printing Workshop

Woodblock Printing Workshop

“I have always been in love with the natural world. As a young girl, our summers were spent sailing around Lake George, New York, picking berries, camping, fishing and bird watching. Those magical experiences have shaped who I am and how I express myself through art. It has given me a passion for the beauty and wonder of nature and a deep gratitude of the vitality for the wild landscapes.” ~ Hannah Spencer

We will be creating a one color block print with the theme Envisioning. Whether it’s a cabin in the woods for the solitude you’re longing for or a bold image of a turtle reminding you to slow down….brng an image of whatever you envision for yourself for 2025. Hannah will help you cut, carve and print your artwork. Soup will be provided for lunch.

What to bring:

  • A image of what you would like to welcome into the new year.

What’s included:

  • Tools to cut and carve your very own blockprint.

  • Tools can be taken home.

  • Double sided block to carve.

Hannah will be printing your finished artwork to take home.

$75 per person

Member Rate: 10% discount. Use “MEMBER” code at checkout.

Spencer is a self-taught woodblock artist

and a fly-fishing guide. “I use woodblock to challenge me and my thought process.” She finds that

as she carves the wood, she continually reminds herself, “to soften the edges and dark areas, not

to draw in every detail. Sometimes it is what you don’t carve or call attention to that has the

greatest impact. A lesson in life and how I want to live.”

Her artwork begins out in the field where she sketches her inspired surroundings. Then she

transfers the drawings onto a sustainable wood block in reverse. She carefully prepares the

woodblock as a relief pattern, cutting away the negative spaces with Japanese hand tools in several

sizes. When she is satisfied with the carving, she inks the block and prints it onto paper.

Spencer’s work comes from an old tradition that she deliberately chooses, “I avoid the overt use of

modern technology by carving, pressing, and printing in the old- fashioned method...by hand.” She

uses oil-based inks and prints onto archival Japanese paper for her black and white images and

archival watercolor paper with watercolor paint for her colored images.

Currently, Spencer resides with husband and 7-year-old twins on the banks of the Salmon River in

Idaho. She and her family live off grid where they have built a sustainable straw-bale home. They

maintain bees, a garden that feeds the family, and pure joy for their surroundings.

Back to the Drawing Board - open-ended is rethinking this workshop

Back to the Drawing Board - open-ended is rethinking this workshop

Glass is an amazing art medium, in this class you will learn a little about it and the techniques and tools used to form it. To make your votive candle holder you will be working with a special glass formulation that allows us to safely and beautifully fuse it into functional or sculptural items. You will cut glass components, select and apply a variety of embellishments and prepare the mold that will be used in two kiln firings. I will take your work to my studio and fire your piece…in a week or so you’ll be able to pick it up to use and display!

Terri Johanson

After years of professional education and workforce program administration, policy work and teaching it became clear to me that my heart and soul required me to engage in an activity that created an actual product…and that need found fruition when I became totally engaged and immersed in artistic work with glass—I discovered that an artist lived inside me!

My work in the glass studio is filled with the reflection of light through luminescent sheets of glass. I am alternately calmed and excited as the kilnforming processes of cutting, grinding, firing, and polishing of the glass produces vessels or sculptural works of art…that I enjoy and that others find joy in also.

My love affair with glass and my skills and expertise in working with it, have naturally aligned with my experience and love of teaching. So, in addition to my personal work in the studio, I also enjoy sharing my skills with adults and young people as they begin an exploration of the glass medium and hopefully begin their own artistic adventures.
